Things to Remember
Perhaps especially at this time of the year, there seems to be a lot to remember. I'm one of those people who finds 'to do' lists helpful, and I confess I have sometimes written things that I've already done, just for the satisfaction of ticking them off! In recent years I've gone electronic, so instead of losing my list in a pile somewhere, I can schedule reminders on my phone to prompt me at just the right moment.
As I write, our Christmas tree stands next to the sofa. A unique collection of trinkets hang amongst the fairy lights, reminiscent of school fairs, time with friends, Sunday Club crafts, and Christmassy trips. Each of our boys has a perspex bauble given by a teacher, painted with his name and holding encouraging statements from classmates. Some things to remember are not to be ticked off and moved on from, but cherished.
This past week, I've had my PhD proposal approved by Manchester University (through which Nazarene Theological College is accredited), ready to start a part-time programme in January. Such a milestone is a cause for both celebration and reflection. It's been a huge privilege to study up to MA level, and now to have opportunity to teach. Although I've thought about PhD study for quite a while, and then put in some serious effort to prepare a proposal, it suddenly feels very real and there's a lot of work ahead! In amongst the joy, I'm pondering all sorts of questions and uncertainties about what I'll need to prioritise, and the implications for my time, relationships, responsibilities, and finances. I've had moments wondering whether it's even possible.
Here, then, there are important things to remember. As followers of Jesus, we don't embark on journeys like this because they're guaranteed to be smooth, or because success is somehow predetermined. I'm sure there'll be many moments in which I need to call to mind God's leading and provision. At times, I'll have to choose to work through pain, trusting that God can and will use it to form me both theologically and personally. I'm determined to continue listening to God through the Bible, worshipping with my church family, using and re-reading my prayer journal, and sharing openly with Jesus-loving, truth-speaking friends. Whilst electronic reminders can prompt me about various tasks and appointments, it's even more important to actively remember the call and promises of the One who is good and faithful.⬦
